At Verita Neuro we understand that while there isn’t a cure, progress and partial recovery can be possible in certain cases with the right care and treatment. Our team uses the latest in innovative neuromodulation and regenerative therapies to bring hope to those with paraplegia. We work toward reconnecting lost pathways, restoring function, and increasing levels of independence.

We provide individualized treatments for patients with a range of spinal cord injuries, designed for your own unique needs, medical status, and personal goals.

What is Paraplegia?

Paraplegia is the medical term for the loss of movement and sensation in the lower half of the body. Typically, paraplegia is caused by a spinal cord injury at the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral levels – although certain conditions like hereditary spastic paraplegia or human error during difficult births can also cause the condition.

How severe your condition is depends on whether your injury is complete or incomplete and whats the exact leve of injury, and patients can also suffer with other complications, including loss of bladder or bowel control, neuropathic pain, muscle spasms, and challenges with blood pressure and controlling body temperature.

How We Approach Paraplegia at Verita Neuro

No two spinal cord injuries are the same, and so at Verita Neuro how we approach every patient has to be tailored to their individual needs. Even with the best and most innovative treatments – not every spinal cord injury can be helped – but we offer multiple pioneering treatments that may help people living with paraplegia regain function or reduce symptoms.

Our team of world-class Neurosurgeons, Rehabilitation experts, and Physiotherapists will work with you and your family or caretaker to create a program designed for you.

Treatments for Paraplegia at Verita Neuro

Epidural Stimulation

At Verita Neuro one of our most established treatments for paraplegia is Epidural Stimulation. The process works by implanting a small programmable spinal cord stimulator over the affected lumbar spinal levels, acting as a bridge to amplify signals between the brain and spinal cord below the injury.

Once surgery is completed our team works on “mapping” where we program the stimulator to optimize muscle activation exactly where you need it. Patients are then required to partake in a rehabilitation period to support the rediscovery of movement.

Some of the benefits reported by paraplegic patients include:

  • Improved voluntary movement in the legs
  • Greater muscle strength and coordination
  • Increased stamina and motor control
  • Improvements in bladder, bowel, blood pressure, and temperature regulation
  • Reduction in neuropathic pain and spasms
  • Boost in psychological well-being and autonomy

LamiSpine Treatment

Some paraplegic patients aren’t candidates for Epidural Stimulation and in that case we can explore the possibilities LamiSpine has to offer. Some spinal injuries occur at specific spinal levels and in that case LamiSpine might be a better option.

LamiSpine is a new treatment developed by Verita Neuro that uses targeted Stem Cells delivery to help recover movement in patients with Paraplegia. LamiSpine works by removing a small section of vertebra to expose the injury site and allow for the direct injection of Stem Cells in the damaged area of the spinal cord.

Some of our patients have seen benefits including:

  • Renewed lower limb movement
  • Standing with support and assisted steps
  • Strengthened blood pressure and body temperature control
  • Reduced pain and spasms
  • Improvements in bladder, bowel, and sexual function

Stem Cell Treatment

Not to be confused with LamiSpine Treatment, Stem Cell treatment is also an important option for Paraplegics / especially when combined with other approaches. Stem Cells have the potential to repair and replace damaged tissue, reduce inflammation, and support the regeneration of lost connections.

At Verita Neuro we only use fresh Stem Cells, maximizing the potency of the cells to increase your chances of regaining movement after the procedure.

Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care

Even when using the best available treatments in the world, rehabilitation is key to increasing the chances of success. All of our treatments are followed by intensive physiotherapy sessions to help you rediscover movement. Our programs include occupational therapy and life-long support. Recovery from paraplegia doesn’t have a quick fix – but our team are here to help you on your journey.
